Doña Carmen’s 1 hectare farm is located in the Valle de Pavón of the Urrao region of Antioquia of Northwestern Colombia. Here farmers are afforded extremely high altitudes as the valley floor starts at 1800 meters with farms planted up to 2100 meters. Interestingly enough, just a few years ago the average temperatures in this area were to low and the coffee plants struggled. The area has warmed in the past few years due to climate change and the coffee plants are much more vigorous and are producing much higher quality coffee. Doña Carmen’s farm is planted with what seems to be a natural regression of Caturra, differing from standard Caturra by tree height and elongated-narrow shaped cherries and seeds that resemble Typica. With this unique varietal she was the first farmer from this region to take 1st place in the Cup of Excellence competition and she did it with this heirloom Caturra cultivar.
