Gishamwana island is located just off the shoreline of Rwanda in northern Lake Kivu. More than 35,000 coffee trees have been planted here on this privately owned coffee farm. The coffee grows under lots of shade, not common for many African coffees. All of the production is done on the island which provides some protection from many diseases and pest that are more prevalent on the mainland of Rwanda. This coffee is dry and wet fermented before being dried on traditional raised beds. Expect a classic Rwanda profile in the cup, full of tart fruit flavors backed up by lots of caramel sweetness and warm spices such as mace and cinnamon.
